Ethylene (C2H4) is the largest feedstock for the petrochemical industry and produced by steam cracking or thermal decomposition of naphtha or ethane (C2H6).
C2H4 is the starting chemical for many other products and must meet polymer grade (≧99.95%) specifications for polyethylene plastic manufacturing. Ensuring high purity and productivity of C2H4 is essential for efficient operations in ethylene plants.

Acetylene (C2H2) is a by-product produced during hydrocarbon cracking in ethylene plant furnaces and treated as impurity in C2H4 production. To manage this, C2H2 is generally converted to C2H4 by adding hydrogen (H2) in acetylene converter, with carbon monoxide (CO) added to improve C2H4 productivity. However, fluctuations in CO concentration could cause process temperature runaways, and high CO levels can shorten the acetylene converter catalyst's lifetime.
